The story: At the beginning of the 21st century there is war between two armies: the regular army of the world government and rebels, who aspire to a military dictatorship and are led by General Murden. In 2026 the so-called Metal Slugs (special tanks) were developed, which were stolen two years later by the rebels. A special force called Peregrine Falcon is being sent to destroy them.
The Game: The player runs through mostly horizontal scrolling levels and tries to advance as far as possible by switching off opponents. The high score is increased by collecting valuables and freeing prisoners. The player has a variety of weapons and power-ups at his disposal.
At the end of each level, a huge boss is waiting to be destroyed. What makes the game stand out from the crowd is the possibility to get into the eponymous Metal Slug (a tank) and the attention to detail of the developers.
One of the most striking features of the Metal-Slug series are the many destructible environments, including houses, terrain like in Metal Slug 1 and the sometimes very brutal demise of the opponents. Even if the red blood is replaced by a white liquid in some versions of the game, the animations of death have remained the same. The use of grenades or the shotgun "shreds" sometimes entire flocks of enemies.
