Captain America is a platform beat 'em up / shoot 'em up
game based on the popular Marvel comic book.
Data East used a 32-bit ARM processor to give it more power than any of
its previous games. This provided nice handling of all the sprites on the
screen, and along with the slightly beefed up sound hardware for the music, it
made for a great game.
This game has 5 stages, each with at least 2 bosses.
The player can choose from Captain America, Iron Man, Vision, and Hawkeye. Each
character has his own set of attacking & defensive moves. There are areas of
some stages that are non-platform shooting sections, such as the flying section
of stage 2 in the New York skies, the underwater swimming section in stage 3,
and the flying section of stage 5 through space. Some other well-known
characters to fans of the comic book drop by occasionally to help out. These
include Quicksilver (who brings an energy replenishing ball), Wonder-Man (who
delivers the sky sled to Captain America and Hawkeye & picks up the player
after defeating Mech. Skull at the end), the Sub-Mariner who tells the player to
dive into the water in stage 3, and the Wasp who protects the player from damage
in the flying levels of stages 2 & 5.
