Boogie Wings is a Shooter from Data East
You fly a biplane with a hook on a chain, and you fire at odd victorian
looking tanks and airships, all along with a ragtime musical score.
This is
one of the most humorous shooters ever by Data East. One other
particularity was that, if your plane was hit two times, it was destroyed and
you then had to continue on foot. On foot you can still pick up and throw
objects, and also get into abandoned vehicles. These range from cars, to tanks,
hopping walkers, a giant robot, pogosticks, missile launching fire engines, and
even a giraffe! If these are hit twice, again you're back on foot.
The game itself is crammed with humour and little touches. The Koney Island
boss is frankenstein outside a haunted house, complete with hookable coffins,
ghosts, and witches. The Blues Brothers are performing in the background,
Satan Claus booming "MERRY CHRISTMAS" while firing shots from his sack. You
can grab bits of dinosaur skeleton and chuck them at a persuing aircraft,
or chase a trojan horse on the back of a giraffe... The level of details is
astonishing.
The graphics are brilliant, everything is very well drawn, nicely
animated, and done with a sense of humour. The snow in the Christmas level
really has to be seen, the screen shakes visibily when something really
explodes, and everything is shaded to perfection. If you can, get this game.
It's not easy to find and it's not cheap, but its a MUST for any PCB collecting
shooter fan.
