Shock Troopers is an action shooter from Saurus
The Gameplay is very much like a mixture of Capcoms Mercs and Metal
Slug.
For starters, you get a choice of 8 characters, some faster than others
and each with their own special attacks that include grenades, rockets and even
explosive boomerangs. You also get to choose between “Lonely Wolf” or “Team”
mode. Lonely Wolf mode is the standard mode, where you pick one character and
fight through each stage, but in Team mode you have to select three, and by
pressing the C button you can change between them during game play. The idea of
this is so that you can choose the right person for each section, although you
still only get one energy bar for each person. After you select your mode, you
also get to pick a route through the game; these include either Jungle, Valley
or mountain levels. This game is very satisfying to play, mostly because the
controls feel great and are very responsive. There's the usual fire and special
weapon buttons, and also a dodge button that lets you avoid enemy bullets.
There's a good deal of graphical detail in this game and there are a lot
of different types of bad guys including soldiers, tanks, helicopters and many
others. The enemy soldiers die in a variety of different ways too, much like in
Metal Slug. You can shoot them, torch them with a flame-thrower and even punch
or stab them if you get in close. Watching an injured soldier that is on a
stretcher get dropped because you shot the guys carrying him is very funny. It
is also possible to destroy certain objects in the background like houses and
bunkers too, which is a lot of fun. Everything has a cartoon look to it, again a
little like Metal Slug.
If you are looking for a great action packed shooter, then this is for you.
Shock Troopers is one of the best that the Neo Geo has to offer.
